July 14, 2025 - The Annual Dog Leash Issue
It's both shocking and embarrassing. Again and again, I see photos on Facebook or Instagram of dogs running freely in nature or on every beach—even though leash laws apply everywhere from April 1st to September 30th. This is national law, without exception—period. Why is this so widely ignored?
When you bring up this topic with people here in groups, you're often attacked immediately. Some react so aggressively and inconsiderately that you almost feel ashamed on behalf of "German tourists." How can anyone show so little respect for the customs and laws of their host country?
There are no exceptions.
Even if some claim their dog can run free "at the water's edge"—that's MISLEADING. The law has no loopholes. The rule is clear: leash from April through the end of September on all beaches ().
Yet there are so many better alternatives: dog forests ("Hundeskove") exist nationwide, often several near every town, even in remote areas. These fenced parks give your dog safe, free play all year long. Anyone with a smartphone can find these forests in their vacation area in just a few minutes.
The purpose of the leash law? It protects not just people, but also wildlife that breeds and raises young during summer. Free-roaming dogs disturb nesting sites and cause stress to birds and other animals ().
My appeal to all dog owners:
- Follow the leash requirement from April 1st through September 30th—on all beaches! It's national law without exception.
- Use the dog forests—spacious, safe, legal—all year round.
- Plan ahead, check with your phone—takes five minutes max.
- Think about protecting nature and people. You're guests here—act like it.
Only this way do we show we take responsibility—for our dogs and our behavior in Denmark. Then we can truly enjoy this country—but respectfully and lawfully.
