Dreams of Denmark April 2, 2023
Today is Palm Sunday, and as I sit here enjoying this wonderful spring weather, my thoughts wander northward, to the Danish west coast. What might it look like there right now? The North Sea is probably still rough and wild, typical for this time of year. In North Jutland, temperatures are certainly still much lower than they are here with us.
Sometimes I have to smile when I think about my earlier plans. For years, I was convinced that if I ever left Germany, it could only be heading south. The idea of warm summers, a Mediterranean lifestyle, and mild winters had something incredibly seductive about it.
But life always surprises you. Instead of going south, I now feel drawn north with all my strength. The rugged beauty of the Danish coast, the vast landscapes, and the special way of life of the Danes have won me over. Of course, I'm preoccupied with the question of how I'll manage with the colder climate. But somehow I sense that this challenge will be part of the adventure.
Originally, we wanted to set out in May to look at our first houses. Now it will be early June. But that's fine—fortunately, we're flexible with our schedule and not bound to school holidays. This freedom gives us the opportunity to find the right place at our leisure.
The thought of soon driving through the small Danish coastal towns, exploring potential new hometowns, and perhaps even finding our dream house, fills me with joyful anticipation. It's remarkable how dreams can change—and how sometimes completely unexpected paths open up that you never would have considered before.
