Home is where the heart finds peace

A visit to Germany shows an expat couple how much they've truly settled in Denmark. After just three days instead of five, they return to their new home.

We actually planned to stay in Germany for five days - but it turned out to be just three.

We realized we simply didn't feel comfortable there anymore. It was loud, hectic, dirty - so different from the life we've grown to love here in Denmark.

Of course, we had a place to stay. Christoph and Yin had put a flat at our disposal where we could be by ourselves. And spending time with family was wonderful too - especially visiting my brother. We ate together, laughed, shared memories.

One particularly special moment was our walk through the town where we both grew up. We visited the cemetery and paused there. That was important.

But the rest of the week was simply too much. Too loud, too overwhelming. We decided to cut our trip short and drive back early - and that was exactly the right decision.

Once we got home, we took a deep breath. Two days of simply being still, time for ourselves, no plans, no appointments. And today was the cherry on top: our favourite restaurant "Mimis" has reopened after its winter break.

We went for their fish buffet - and it was delicious. A feast for all the senses.

In moments like these, we're reminded once again how much we've truly arrived. Here in our new home. And how grateful we are that we took this leap.
