Between Hope and Fear July 28, 2023
I'm sitting in my car in the bank's parking lot right now and can't bring myself to go inside. Part of me is actually hoping they'll tell me today that I can't get financing for the house.
I think I'm getting cold feet.
Everything is happening so incredibly fast. A few weeks ago we saw the house on Denmark's east coast for the first time, and now here I am with a folder full of documents to apply for a bridge loan. All the papers are neatly organized next to me on the passenger seat—proof of income, land registry excerpts, property valuations, and everything else you need. It can't possibly be this simple!?!?
Do I really want this now? I'm completely uncertain! There's this strange feeling inside me as I sit here on my way to the bank, caught between hope and fear. On one hand, I'm hoping I'll get the money and we can buy the house in Denmark, but on the other hand, I'm terrified. Because if we did get the money, everything would suddenly move so fast. Should it really happen this quickly?
A week ago everything was clear. The realtor was nice, the lawyer was on board, the condition reports looked good. But now, right before this decisive step, these doubts creep in. Is it really the right decision to sell two houses to buy this one in Denmark? What if we can't stand it there? What if the language barrier is too big?
The bank consultant is already waiting for me. I have to go in now. Maybe it's good if the decision is taken out of my hands today. Either they say yes—then it's meant to be. Or they say no—then it simply wasn't meant to be.
Take a deep breath. Grab the folder. Get out.
