Holiday Shopping - What Do We Pack, What Do We Buy Locally?

Many travelers bring crates of groceries to Denmark because they assume everything is terribly expensive. I'm skeptical of this claim and have developed my own strategy for holiday shopping.

You read it all the time in travel reports and blogs: tourists haul crates of groceries and other things to Denmark because supposedly everything is so terribly expensive. To be honest, I haven't really noticed that from our previous visits. But I'll definitely pay closer attention to supermarket prices during our next stay.

My shopping list is already written, and we've already gathered quite a bit. What we definitely pack are our usual cosmetics. When it comes to kitchen essentials, I've kept it to the bare minimum: a half-liter bottle of oil, a half-liter bottle of vinegar, salt, pepper, and — as a little emergency ration — two packages of Spaghetti Miracoli.

The pasta is really just a safety net for the first day, in case we're too tired or unmotivated after traveling to do a big shop. We're bringing a second package just in case, but otherwise we've decided: we want to discover and enjoy Danish delicacies! There are so many delicious products there that you simply can't get in Germany.

I'm really looking forward to trying fresh fish. With only ten days, we don't need to stock up on huge supplies anyway, and we've decided to visit a restaurant or two. After all, that's simply part of the vacation experience!

💡 Packing Right for Your Denmark Vacation

Limit groceries to the essentials like oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper. Only bring familiar cosmetics. For short stays up to ten days, stockpiling large supplies isn't worth it. Take the opportunity to discover regional products and restaurants.
