When Plans Start to Crumble: The Dilemma with Michael's Childhood Home

The sale of Michael's childhood home has stalled for weeks, even though we've already lowered the price. The difficult tenant situation is scaring off potential buyers, and with it, our plan to move to Denmark is in jeopardy.

When Plans Start to Crumble: The Dilemma with Michael's Childhood Home *June 14, 2023

It's mid-June now, and I can feel a panic rising in me that I can barely put into words. For weeks, we've been trying to sell Michael's childhood home, but every interested buyer who comes to view it backs out. We've already lowered the price significantly—so much that we barely have any room to negotiate. Yet it seems as though the house simply doesn't convince anyone.

By now, I'm convinced that the tenants are the biggest problem. Looking back, it probably wasn't a smart decision to rent out the house so thoughtlessly. At the time, we were just relieved to find someone willing to rent it, but now this carelessness is coming back to bite us hard. The situation with the tenants has apparently made the house unattractive to potential buyers.

Even our real estate agent is increasingly frustrated. She had given us hope that we could sell the house quickly, but it's just not moving. Her enthusiasm has clearly faded, and I wonder whether she even believes anymore that we'll find a buyer soon.

The problem is that so much depends on this sale. Our plan was to sell Michael's parents' house to settle the outstanding bank loans and financial debts that accumulated during the Corona pandemic. Most of all, the losses from the music school tore a big hole in our finances. Additionally, the sale would have allowed us to make a down payment to apply for a new loan, which we wanted to use to finance our move to Denmark.

Originally, it was my wish to keep my own house for a while longer. I wanted to make the move stress-free, without having to give up my home right away. The plan was to empty my house later and then sell it at my own pace. But this wish now seems completely out of reach.

Now everything is hanging in the balance. Without the sale of Michael's childhood home, our dream of a fresh start in Denmark is slipping further and further away. I'm completely at a loss. Is it even possible to emigrate without the house being sold? Can we still save this plan?

At the moment, all I can do is hold onto hope that a solution—and a buyer—will appear. But honestly? I don't know how much longer I can bear this uncertainty.

Without the sale of Michael's childhood home, our dream of a fresh start in Denmark is slipping further and further away.
