A triangular shawl, a cup of tea, and plenty of hygge

Discovering a wonderful handicraft culture in Denmark and a special visit to a unique wool shop.

A triangular shawl, a cup of tea, and plenty of hygge 28.02.2026

There are moments when you feel that something wonderful is beginning. Today was one of those moments.

If you know me, you know that I've been fascinated for a long time watching friends and colleagues create beautiful scarves, wraps, and sweaters—from nothing but yarn, needles, and a lot of love. In Germany, where I grew up, there were still two wool shops in the city during my childhood, both part of large chains. They lasted until the mid-eighties, then gradually disappeared. Sometimes an ambitious woman who was passionate about knitting and crochet would open a small shop of her own.

These businesses often had their own special charm, lasted a while, and then also disappeared. Today, I can barely remember the last time I saw a wool or handicraft shop.

Here in Denmark, it's a completely different world.

Women knit and crochet, there are communities and clubs where people pursue their hobby together, and you find handicraft shops everywhere with really high-quality yarns. The wonderful thing about it: even in the supermarket, you can buy wool in genuinely very good quality. It's a handicraft culture that I really admire.

I'd been to one of these wonderful shops a few times with friends and had to restrain myself each time. But today it was finally happening. Today I was swept away by it.

Today I visited Pernille's for the first time.

Her shop is located in an old NATO building near Sæby, and that alone is quite a sensation. The rooms are actually still bomb-proof, and before I was even allowed to hold a single strand of wool, I got a fascinating tour through this extraordinary building. History you can touch.

Actually, I'd only come for the mink wool. Yarn for a large triangular shawl—that was the plan. But Pernille doesn't just sell wool. In her shop you'll also find amber, jewelry, beautiful ceramics, and really great clothing. If only I hadn't looked so carefully...

So now I also have a wonderful, long flannel shirt that I can wear in spring just as well as a light coat. Fantastic in both cut and quality. I'm absolutely thrilled.

And of course, I also took home a few skeins of that lovely mink wool. I've already wound one skein from the strand, and in a moment I'll settle down by the fireplace with a cup of good tea and knit the first rows.

The teacup, by the way, is a gift from my dear friend and colleague Danni. It comes from the workshop of a truly gifted potter, is beautiful and delicate, and I love drinking from it.

It's the same here with the ceramic studios as it is with the wool shops: they're everywhere. You just have to know where. And especially where the best ones are.

I think I'm just beginning to find out.

Here in Denmark, it's a completely different world.
