Fast Forward Toward Denmark September 17, 2023
It's incredible how time flies and how much you can accomplish in such a short time.
These last seven days felt like they were on fast forward. When I collapse into bed in the evening, I sometimes wonder if the day really only had 24 hours. It feels like we've compressed weeks of work into just a few days.
Cluttered spaces cleared out, things thrown away, boxes packed, boxes taped shut and labeled. My hands are rough from folding cardboard and tearing tape. I dream about labels at night and ask myself in the morning whether I really know what's in which box. "Living room books," "Kitchen urgent," "Winter decorations" — my life summarized in keywords on brown cardboard.
Clothes packed away, shopping done, cat care organized, and so on and so on. The list of completed tasks keeps growing, but somehow the to-do list doesn't seem to get any shorter. For every task I cross off, two new ones appear.
The cats are watching all this chaos with a mix of curiosity and suspicion. Boudelair in particular has decided that he must jump into every empty box before I'm allowed to fill it — his version of quality control, I suppose. Ebbi, our dog, follows me everywhere, as if he's afraid I might disappear without him.
In not even 14 days, we'll be on our way. On our way to Denmark, on our way to pick up our keys. I'm so excited. This mix of anticipation, nervousness, and a touch of melancholy is keeping me from sleeping well. Sometimes, when I take a brief break from packing and walk through the increasingly emptier rooms, I really realize what a big step this is.
But then I think about the ocean view, about the new surroundings, about all the adventures waiting for us, and the excitement takes over again. In two weeks, we'll hold the keys to our new life in our hands. It's almost unbelievable!
But now I really need to get back to it — the box with winter jackets is still waiting for me, and I still need to figure out how we're going to transport the plants. Life on fast forward continues!
