A Bureaucratic Marathon Instead of Coffee Chat: SIRI and Your Danish Start

Social media glamorizes moving to Denmark — but SIRI is the strict gatekeeper of the system. Without perfect documentation and realistic expectations, many expats fail.

"Totally relaxed", "super quick", "no problem at all" ... when you scroll through the colorful Reels and Stories on social media these days, you'd think moving to Denmark is just a casual stroll with the whole family.

But I also know the faces of people who almost failed because of this "it's-so-simple" mindset. Today, let's clear up the most dangerous misconceptions about SIRI:

First of all: SIRI is not a tourist destination

In some posts, a visit to SIRI (Styrelsen for International Rekrutering og Integration) is portrayed like a relaxed morning outing with the kids.

But the reality for most immigrants looks quite different.

SIRI is the "bouncer" of the Danish system.

Without the registration certificate from there, you won't get a CPR number, no Danish bank account, no mobile phone contract, and no access to the health system.

If you show up here unprepared, you quickly realize: Danish bureaucracy is digital and brilliant, but it's also ruthlessly precise.

It's often claimed that you can simply "get started".

But here's the fact: SIRI demands a precise foundation.

  • If you're coming as an employee, you need an airtight contract. A small error in the document? Rejected.
  • If you're coming as self-sufficient (which often applies to retirees or sabbatical-takers), you face a real hurdle. A nice smile won't cut it here! You often have to prove enormous savings. For a family with children, we're talking about amounts that can bust many an emergency fund.
  • "Totally relaxed" is only the case if you have a bulging bank account and perfect documents in your suitcase.

Social media often suggests you walk in and come out with confirmation. What many don't mention: just getting an appointment at the centers (like København or Odense) often means waiting weeks. During this time, you're completely up in the air. You might already be working, but you can't open an account for your salary to be deposited into. This bureaucratic limbo is psychologically extremely stressful for many expats.

When influencers claim "no extra questions" were asked, it's often pure luck or what's called survivor bias. Just because things went smoothly for one person doesn't mean that's the standard.

Denmark is a highly efficient country, but it wants to know exactly who's coming and whether you'll be a burden on the state.

If you take your preparation for SIRI lightly because you "read it on the internet", you risk your entire start in the north.

So don't be blinded by the filtered world.

Denmark is wonderful, and the system works fantastically once you're in it.

But getting in requires discipline, precise documentation, and patience.

A good start in Nordjylland doesn't begin with the hope that "everything will work out", but with solid research and the knowledge that dealing with authorities here isn't an easy event — it's the ticket to your new life.

And of course the completed form A or B, if you haven't already submitted it online.
